Hockey World Cup is starting from 15th August. For the first time, women’s and men’s tournaments are being held together. Belgium and Netherlands are hosting it together.
The Indian men’s team will play the first match of the tournament against Wales. This match will start at 4:30 pm. Before this, the first women’s match will be between Australia and Japan from 1:30 pm.
Tournament will run for 16 days, matches will be held at 2 venues
The tournament, which started on Saturday, will run for 16 days. A total of 50 matches will be played in both the tournaments. These will be organized in 2 phases. First group stage, crossover pool. Then there will be semi-final and final matches. All matches will be held at 2 venues.
A total of 32 teams are participating
16 teams each (total 32 teams) will participate in the Men’s and Women’s World Cup. In the group stage, 16 teams will be divided into 4 groups (A, B, C, D) and each team will play 3 matches. The top-2 teams from each group will go to the crossover round. These 8 teams will be divided into 2 groups.
Each team will play three more matches in this round. These matches will be against those teams with whom he has not had a match. The top-2 teams from here will reach the semi-finals.
Finals will be held on 29-30 August
The final matches will be played on 29 and 30 August. The final of the Women’s World Cup will be played on 29 August. Whereas, the title match of the Men’s World Cup will start on August 30 at 8:00 pm. Bronze medal matches will also be held on both the final days.
World Cup for the first time in Belgium
- There will be no quarter-finals in this World Cup.
- For the first time, men’s and women’s Hockey World Cups are being held together.
- Belgium is hosting the World Cup for the first time. Its men’s team is number-1.

No prize money, but trophy and medal.
There is no prize money in the Hockey World Cup. International Hockey Federation (FIH) gives trophies and medals in world level tournaments like World Cup or Pro League.
Netherlands played all World Cups
Teams like India, Netherlands and Spain have all played in the Men’s World Cup. Australia, England and Argentina have played this global tournament 15 times each. Pakistan has participated 14 times and Belgium 8 times. Whereas, Netherlands, Argentina and Germany have played all the World Cups in the women’s category. Australia 14, England-Spain 13-13, China 10 and India have played this tournament 9 times.
India won the first World Cup in 1975
The Indian men’s hockey team started playing in this tournament right from the first Hockey World Cup, which started in 1971. The team has participated in the tournament 15 times so far and has won the World Cup only once.
The Indian hockey team won this title by defeating Pakistan in the final of the World Cup played in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1975.
The Indian women’s hockey team has not won any World Cup yet. The team participated in its first World Cup in 1974.

Hosting of first World Cup snatched from Pakistan due to war
The idea of organizing Hockey World Cup first came to the mind of Pakistan Air Marshal Noor Khan. In the FIH meeting in March 1969, India and Pakistan proposed to jointly organize the tournament. Meanwhile, in 1971, war started between India and Pakistan.
Pakistan invited India to play, but some politicians and people there, under the leadership of cricket player Abdul Hafeez Kardar, started violently opposing India’s participation.
In March 1971, a few months before the start of the match, FIH had shifted this mega event from Pakistan to a neutral European country Spain (Barcelona) due to security reasons. However, Pakistan won the first title.
