Social activist Sonam Wangchuk has appealed to the countrymen to start a ‘quiet revolution’ before the country’s 80th Independence Day. He said that if India has to become a developed and respected nation by 2047, the country will have to bring about invaluable changes in the way it chooses its political leadership.
Wangchuk posted a video message on social media saying that he was ill for the last few days and during this time he kept thinking about the country and its future. He has appealed to the people of the country to suggest the names of such selfless, fearless and characterful people who are capable of giving new thinking about the future of India. They feel disappointed after seeing the current situation of the country.
‘If we do not become a developed country in 2047…’
Wangchuk said that many countries which were lagging behind or at par with India have today gone far ahead of it. He mentioned the per capita GDP giving examples of Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
He warned that if the current situation continues, India may remain away from the goal of becoming a developed country by 2047. According to him, if the education system of the country remains backward, the future of the country will also remain backward.
‘There is a need to change the system, not the parties’
Sonam Wangchuk Referring to the recent movements of students, he said that people demanded change and some changes were also seen. He also mentioned the resignation of the Education Minister, but said that at present there is no expectation of any major change from the new Education Minister.
He said that governments of different parties in different states took action against the people who raised their voice against injustice. Therefore the problem is not limited to any one political party.
Referring to the anti-corruption movement of 2012-13, Wangchuk said that at that time the government changed after the movement, but after about 12 years, corruption and injustice are emerging in a new form as a bigger challenge than before.
‘If the leaders are not right then the country will go on the wrong path’
Wangchuk said that big change and peaceful revolution is necessary in the country, so that through elections, such leaders can be brought forward who can give the right direction to the country. He said, ‘Until the leaders are right, the entire country will move on the wrong path.’
However, he also said that even today there are many leaders in the country who follow the honest and right path and he respects such leaders.
‘Criminal cases against almost half the MPs’
Wangchuk also expressed concern about MPs with criminal cases in Parliament. He claimed that about half of the MPs have criminal cases against them and about a third have serious charges like murder, rape and kidnapping.
He clarified that he is not talking about any one party or the ruling party or opposition, but is expressing concern about the system of the country.
Wangchuk said he wanted to bring together the country’s “best minds” and seek advice and suggestions. However, he clarified that he is not just looking for intellectuals who only have ideas.
He appealed to suggest the names of such people who are selfless, fearless, of good character and principled and have the ability to do something for the future of the country.
He said that since he is sitting in Ladakh, he is not aware about such people present in different parts of the country. Therefore he asked people to suggest the name of at least one such person from their state and region.
‘Can we start India’s second freedom movement?’
Wangchuk asked the people whether India’s second freedom movement could be started together. He said that he wants to communicate with such people in different states and cities of the country and take suggestions from people regarding the future of the country.
