Personal data of Bank of Baroda customers and internal documents of the bank have been leaked on the dark web. A source and cybersecurity researcher related to this matter has given this information.
According to Srikant L, founder of Cashless Consumer and cybersecurity researcher, the leaked data includes personal details of customers, identification documents, loan related papers and internal audit records of the bank.
Confirming this data leak, a source related to the matter said that Bank of Baroda has started a forensic audit to investigate this incident.
However, the exact number of how many customers have been affected by this leak is not yet clear. Bank of Baroda has not yet given any official information to the stock exchanges regarding this data breach.
Fear of breach in email system
According to the source, initial indications show that this entire incident happened due to a compromised email system of the bank which was a victim of hack or burglary. Hackers gained access to sensitive data of the bank by hacking the email system.
Claim of sale of 700GB data on dark web
Cybersecurity researcher Srikant L said on the basis of metadata analysis of the website that this data was revealed on a dark web site on Saturday night. This data was advertised on the dark web as a data cache containing more than 700 GB of information.
Regulatory agencies maintained complete silence on the matter
At present, no official statement has been issued by Bank of Baroda, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and India’s cyber security regulatory agency CERT-In on this matter of data leak.
Cyber security concerns are increasing in the corporate world.
This data leak has come to light at a time when cyber security risks are continuously increasing for large companies and financial institutions that store huge amounts of data of customers and businesses.
Earlier in the month of June, due to the cyber attack on Apple’s supplier ‘Tata Electronics’, components design and specifications documents related to Apple and Elon Musk’s company Tesla were leaked on the dark web.
Apart from this, earlier this month, a ransomware group named ‘World Leaks’ had also posted files related to India’s largest nuclear power plant on the dark web.
What is dark web and forensic audit?
- Dark Web: It is a hidden part of the Internet that cannot be accessed by Google or normal search engines. To use it, special software (like Tor Browser) is required. It is often used for activities related to illegal purchases, data theft and hacking.
- Forensic Audit: It is an in-depth technical examination of a digital system or financial records. Its objective is to find out how the hacking or breach took place, from where the data was leaked and whose negligence or involvement was in it, so that it can be used as legal evidence.
Safety tips for bank customers
- Change password and PIN: As a precautionary measure, Bank of Baroda customers should immediately change their net banking, mobile banking app passwords and ATM PIN.
- Avoid phishing calls: Do not share your bank account information, OTP or CVV to any unknown call, message or email. The bank never asks for confidential information over the phone.
