Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai Chanu on Sunday, July 26, became the first female weightlifter in the history of Commonwealth Games to win a hat trick of gold medals at the event, after she bagged her third gold in the women’s 48kg event in Glasgow.

The outcome was hardly ever in doubt; the only intrigue was how far Mirabai could raise the bar. The Manipuri star responded emphatically, delivering a brilliant display of power and composure to etch her name into the record books.

Mirabai shattered the Commonwealth and CWG records in the snatch, while also setting new CWG marks in clean and jerk and total.

Mirabai won her first CWG gold at the 2018 Gold Coast edition of the event. On that occasion, she lifted a total of 196 kg (432 lb), including 86 kg (190 lb) in the snatch and 110 kg (240 lb) in the clean and jerk, setting CWG records and personal bests in all three categories.

Mirabai claimed her second CWG gold medal at the Birmingham 2022 edition, winning the women’s 49kg category. She posted a combined lift of 201 kg (443 lb), including 88 kg (194 lb) in the snatch and 113 kg (249 lb) in the clean and jerk, breaking her own CWG records in all three categories that she had set in 2018.

Mirabai had also won silver in the 48kg event at the 2014 Glasgow edition and 12 years later at the same venue, her career came full circle. On that occasion, her compatriot Sanjita Chanu won the gold.

This has been a record-breaking year for Mirabai. At the Senior National Weightlifting Championships in February, she set three new national records, lifting 89 kg (196 lb) in the snatch and 116 kg (256 lb) in the clean and jerk for a career-best total of 205 kg.

Mirabai’s dominance was evident on Sunday as well, with silver medallist Ruth Asuquo Nyong of Nigeria finishing a distant second with a total lift of 168kg, a massive 22kg behind the Indian’s gold-medal-winning effort.
