Nepal government has rejected the proposal to remove the controversial national map from the one rupee coin. The cabinet refused to approve the new design of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) and sent it back for revision. The government has directed that the official national map of Nepal be included along with the picture of Lo Ghekar (Ghar) Monastery on the new coin. This is the map in which India’s Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura are shown as part of Nepal. This information has been revealed by quoting government officials and officials of Nepal Rastra Bank. The Note and Coin Design Committee of Nepal Rastra Bank had prepared a proposal to feature the image of the historic Lo Ghekar (house) monastery of Mustang on the one rupee coin. After getting approval from the NRB Board, it was sent to the Council of Ministers for final approval through the Finance Ministry. The proposal was prepared even before the formation of the present government. According to officials, preparation of this proposal had started before the formation of the present government. The aim was to show the cultural heritage on the currency in a balanced manner. The NRB says Hindu religious sites like Pashupatinath and Janaki temples feature on existing notes and coins, while Buddhist heritage is less visible. For this reason, Lo Ghekar Monastery, which is among the oldest Buddhist monasteries of Nepal, was chosen. This is also expected to increase tourism in Mustang. Now not only the design of the coin, the metal will also change. Nepal Rastra Bank will prepare a new design as per the instructions of the Cabinet, which will have both the national map and Lo Ghekar Math. Minting of the new coin will start only after getting the final approval from the government. Nepal Rastra Bank is also preparing to change the metal and weight of the one rupee coin. At present it costs more than Rs 2 to make a one rupee coin. To reduce the cost, it is proposed to be made of white metal. Apart from this, a proposal to include the Bhurti Deval temple group of Dailekh on the Rs 10 coin is also under consideration. Controversy arose after the map of 2020. India-Nepal border dispute took place in 2020. India inaugurated the road up to Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand. Nepal protested and released a new political map in May 2020, showing Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura as part of its territory. After this, in June 2020, the Parliament of Nepal amended the Constitution and gave official recognition to this map. Since then the same map is being used on government documents, school books, passports, 100 rupee notes and 1 and 2 rupee coins. Now the government has decided to retain the same official map in the design of the new Rs 1 coin. India had expressed strong objection to this step of Nepal. India says that Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura are Indian territories and the border dispute should be resolved through talks between the two countries and not by unilaterally changing the map.
