IIM Kozhikode sets a record as two in three new MBA students are women

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Kozhikode has achieved a historic milestone in Indian management education, with women accounting for nearly two-thirds of students in its flagship MBA programme for the 2026–28 academic session—the highest female representation ever recorded in the history of the IIM system.

The institute inducted 599 students across its three full-time MBA programmes during its inaugural ceremony for the new academic year. It also welcomed 99 doctoral scholars into its management doctoral programmes, reinforcing its focus on academic excellence, diversity and inclusive leadership.

FLAGSHIP MBA RECORDS HIGHEST EVER FEMALE REPRESENTATION

Among the 499 students admitted to IIM Kozhikode’s flagship Post Graduate Programme (PGP), 329 are women, taking female representation to nearly 66%. The institute said this is the highest proportion of women ever recorded in the flagship MBA programme of any IIM.

The achievement marks another milestone in IIM Kozhikode’s long-standing efforts to improve gender diversity in management education. The institute was the first IIM to cross the 50% women enrolment mark in 2013, when women constituted 54% of its PGP batch. It again crossed the 50% threshold in 2021, increased the share to 59% in 2024, the highest among the older IIMs, and has now raised it further to 66% in 2026.

NEARLY 63% WOMEN ACROSS ALL MBA PROGRAMMES

Across its three full-time MBA programmes, women now make up nearly 63% of the total student intake, placing IIM Kozhikode among the business schools with the highest levels of gender diversity globally.

The programme-wise intake is as follows:

  • Post Graduate Programme (PGP): 499 students, including 329 women (66%)
  • Post Graduate Programme in Liberal Studies & Management (PGP-LSM): 51 students, with women constituting 82% of the batch
  • Post Graduate Programme in Finance (PGP-Fin): 49 students, with women accounting for 12%

Together, the three programmes have admitted 599 MBA students for the 2026 academic session.

GREATER ACADEMIC DIVERSITY WITH MORE NON-ENGINEERS

Alongside gender diversity, the institute has also expanded the academic diversity of its classrooms.

In the flagship PGP, 57% of the incoming students come from non-engineering backgrounds. The share is even higher in the PGP-LSM programme, where 96% of students are non-engineers, while 45% of students in PGP-Fin belong to non-engineering disciplines.

Overall, 59% of students across the institute’s three full-time MBA programmes come from non-engineering backgrounds, reflecting IIM Kozhikode’s continued emphasis on multidisciplinary management education.

RECORD REPRESENTATION AMONG DOCTORAL SCHOLARS

The institute also inducted 99 doctoral scholars into its doctoral ecosystem.

Of these, 27 joined the regular Doctoral Programme in Management (DPM), with women accounting for 66% of the batch—the highest-ever female representation in a regular doctoral cohort at IIM Kozhikode.

Another 72 scholars enrolled in the Executive Doctoral Programme.

The academic year also marks the launch of the inaugural batch of the Doctoral Programme in Management (Teaching Track), a new initiative aimed at preparing future management educators and researchers.

With record-breaking female enrolment, greater academic diversity and an expanding doctoral ecosystem, IIM Kozhikode continues to strengthen its position as one of India’s leading management institutions committed to inclusive and multidisciplinary education.
