A 21-year-old student from Karnataka, who had travelled to Germany for higher studies, died in a suspected drowning incident during an outing with friends near Leipzig, according to a report by The Times of India.
German police have questioned four students, including two Indian nationals, as part of the investigation.
The deceased, identified as Mohammed Aniz Abubakker, was a resident of Marakada-Kunjathbail in Mangaluru.
He was pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree at Rahn Education Institution in Halle and was in his third semester when the incident occurred.
According to the report, Aniz had moved to Germany around 18 months ago after completing his pre-university education in Mangaluru.
His father, Marakada Abubakker Siddiq, is employed in Saudi Arabia.
The report said Aniz had joined a group of classmates and friends for a trekking trip on Thursday morning. After the trek, the group reportedly headed to a water recreation area located near the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig.
It was during this visit that the tragedy unfolded. Emergency services were alerted to the Landauer Bridge area later that afternoon after Aniz reportedly went missing in the water.
Rescue teams subsequently recovered his body from the site, the report mentioned.
Following the incident, German authorities took four students into police custody for questioning.
According to the report, the group included two Indian students.
The questioning forms part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the suspected drowning.
No details about possible charges or conclusions from the investigation have been made public.
PA Hameed Padubidri, a pro bono lawyer assisting the family, was quoted as saying that he is coordinating with the Indian Embassy in Berlin to facilitate the return of Aniz’s mortal remains to his hometown in Mangaluru.
The report added that efforts were currently focused on completing the necessary formalities for repatriation so that the family can perform the last rites in India.
