Germany are set to sack head coach Julian Nagelsmann after their humiliating exit from the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026. Germany faced Paraguay in their Round of 32 match at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough on Monday (June 29), but crashed out after losing the penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw at the end of regular and extra time. The defeat marked Germany’s first-ever loss in a FIFA World Cup penalty shootout.

Days after yet another disappointing World Cup campaign came to an end, reports have emerged that the German Football Association (DFB) is preparing to part ways with Nagelsmann.

According to reports in the German media, the former RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich manager is set to be relieved of his duties, with former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp emerging as the overwhelming favourite to replace him.

According to AFP, Nagelsmann was seen at the DFB headquarters in Frankfurt on Thursday, where he held a three-hour meeting with federation officials. During the meeting, he was reportedly offered a severance package worth seven million euros ($8 million) to step down from the role.

On Tuesday, DFB president Bernd Neuendorf announced an immediate investigation into Germany’s World Cup failure.

A decision on Nagelsmann’s future is expected “by the beginning of next week at the latest,” AFP’s sports subsidiary SID reported on Thursday.

Several German media outlets, including Sky Germany and the Munich-based South German newspaperhave reported that Klopp is the overwhelming favourite to succeed Nagelsmann.

Klopp stepped away from management after leaving Liverpool in 2024 and has since taken up the role of Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull, overseeing the company’s multi-club football network, which includes teams in Austria, Germany, Brazil, the United States and Japan.

Germany in FIFA World Cup 2026

Germany kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in emphatic fashion with a 7-1 win over Curacao in their Group E opener at NRG Stadium in Houston on June 14. They followed it up with a 2-1 comeback victory over Ivory Coast but suffered a 1-2 defeat to Ecuador in their final Group E fixture.

Despite the loss, they finished at the top of the Group E standings with six points from three matches, thanks to a superior goal difference of +6.
