Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is unlikely to make a public appearance at the state funeral of his father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei due to serious security concerns amid heightened regional tensions, according to the Supreme Leader’s Representative in India, Ayatollah Hakim Elahi. Elahi said that while Mojtaba Khamenei personally wishes to attend and interact with mourners, security considerations have made it highly unlikely.

Why Is Mojtaba Khamenei Not Appearing In Public?

Elahi said that those close to Mojtaba Khamenei have indicated that he is eager to step out and meet supporters, but security agencies have advised against it.

“They said it is very dangerous and we cannot provide security for him. I think he will not come out,” he told India Today, adding that the decision has been driven largely by the prevailing threat environment, with tensions between Iran and Israel remaining high in the lead-up to the funeral.

What Are The Security Concerns Surrounding The Funeral?

According to Elahi, the risk assessment has led to strict protective measures around key figures in Iran’s leadership circle. The funeral comes at a time of heightened geopolitical strain, with Iran’s leadership operating under what officials describe as an elevated threat level. He emphasised that the inability to guarantee safety has been the decisive factor in limiting public appearances by high-profile individuals.

What Is The Situation Inside Iran After The Supreme Leader’s Death?

Elahi described a nation in mourning following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, saying supporters view the loss as deeply destabilizing on an emotional and spiritual level.

“It is a very, very big loss for them. They think they have lost their spirit, their soul. They believe nothing can replace him,” he said, adding that people from across Iran and abroad are gathering in Tehran to pay their respects.

Who Is Attending The Funeral?

Thousands of mourners and international dignitaries are expected to attend the state funeral in Tehran, which is taking place under tight security arrangements. The event is being closely watched globally due to its timing amid ongoing regional instability.

Addressing concerns over possible escalation with Israel, Elahi said Iran remains resilient despite recent conflict.

“Iran still is very strong and is ready to stand up,” he said, adding that some countries had expressed support for Iran’s position.
