For years, Ousmane Dembele was one of France’s greatest enigmas.
The talent was never in doubt. Blessed with blistering pace, two-footed dribbling and the ability to unlock any defence, Dembele was tipped to become one of the world’s best from the moment he burst onto the scene. Yet while he sparkled at club level in flashes, his international career never quite took off.

The three goals carried a combined expected goals value of just 0.19, making it the second-lowest xG total for any World Cup hat-trick between 1966 and 2026. Only Hungary’s Laszlo Kiss, whose famous treble against El Salvador in 1982 totalled 0.17 xG, scored a more improbable World Cup hat-trick.
