France faces record heatwave, after its hottest night ever, authorities will close Eiffel Tower early at 4 pm Tuesday, 40 drownings recorded in 5 days as people bathe to cool off.
France from Monday to Tuesday had its hottest night since records began in 1947, the national weather agency Meteo France said.
As France witnesses record breaking heatwave, the authorities have announced that the Eiffel Tower will be closed early on Tuesday.
According to AFP, France sweated through its hottest night ever recorded and reported that 40 people had drowned in the past five days as citizens bathed to cool off. The Eiffel Tower’s operators said it would close early at 4 pm.
The national weather agency Meteo France said that the country had its hottest night, from Monday to Tuesday, since records began in 1947. More than 50 departments were placed under the highest level of heat alert, an unprecedented measure according to forecasters.
As the intense heat continued, many people across France turned to rivers, canals and other waterways in an effort to cool down. French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said the drowning deaths had been recorded since June 18, adding that most of the victims were young people.
AFP reported that several parents reportedly taped survival blankets to windows in a school to lower the temperature inside and pooled their money to buy shade sails for the playground.
On Monday, two children of agead two and four were found dead in a car reportedly due to heatwave.
Similar heatwave has been recorded in several other Eropean countries, with Britain, France, Italy and Spain issuing red alerts and health warnings for much of their territory. Italy’s health ministry declared a red heatwave alert in 15 cities including Milan and Rome.
