Security guard caught posing as CRPF trooper near Eastern Command headquarters

A 29-year-old man who works as a private security guard was arrested in Kolkata on Tuesday after he was allegedly found impersonating a personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) by wearing military fatigues near Fort William, officially known as Vijay Durg, which houses the headquarters of the Indian Army’s Eastern Command.

He was caught during a routine vehicle check conducted by traffic police near the South Gate of the highly sensitive military complex on Monday. Traffic cops intercepted a black Mahindra Scorpio and noticed a man inside dressed in commando-style attire.

The individual was identified as Akash Sonar, a resident of North 24 Parganas district employed as a private security guard for a logistics firm in Haldia.

The situation drew the attention of Military Intelligence personnel stationed nearby. Sonar was subsequently taken inside the Fort William Army complex for questioning and verification.

Following a thorough inquiry, military authorities found no suspicious or subversive angle, and subsequently handed him over to the local police without filing a formal complaint.

Despite being cleared of any security-related concerns by military officials, Sonar was taken into custody by the police. A suo motu case has been registered against him for the unauthorised public use of military-style uniforms, an offence that can attract legal action under relevant provisions of the law.
