NEET may go fully online next year in CBT mode: Dharmendra Pradhan Exclusive

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has indicated that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) is likely to shift to a fully computer-based format from next year, saying the government is working to strengthen the examination system and prevent future irregularities.

In an exclusive interview with India Today TV, Pradhan said this year’s NEET was conducted successfully due to the collective efforts of students, parents, teachers, invigilators and security personnel.

“I would like to thank all the aspirants, parents, teachers, invigilators and security personnel. Everyone performed their duty, which made the examination successful,” he said.

On measures taken to prevent paper leaks, the minister said the government has acted on recommendations made by the Radha Committee and is exploring structural reforms to the examination process.

“The committee had recommended a computer-based test. We are trying to make NEET a CBT examination from next year. We are also discussing whether it can be conducted differently and in a more decentralised manner,” he said, adding that aspirants should prepare accordingly.

Pradhan said the government would make every effort to prevent future irregularities and dismantle what he described as the “paper mafia” nexus.

The minister also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi with closely monitoring the situation. “The Prime Minister is responsible for all citizens. He simply fulfilled that responsibility,” Pradhan said.

Responding to criticism from Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Pradhan said Gandhi had the right to raise questions but accused him of “playing politics with students’ future” and claimed he had an “inferiority complex.” He also criticised recent protests at Jantar Mantar over the issue.
