During a meeting at the United Nations (UN) on Friday, there was a heated argument between Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon and Special Representative of the UN Secretary General Pramila Patton. The meeting was held in New York on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in War.
In the meeting, Israel’s Ambassador demanded the resignation of UN official Patton. Danon alleged that Patton’s report led to Israel’s name being placed on the UN blacklist for the first time for allegations of sexual violence. He said that the report was not impartial and showed bias against Israel.
“You caved in to the anti-Israel stance of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres,” Dannon accused Patten. He claimed that Guterres has been continuously criticizing Israel and Patton’s report was also influenced by the same thinking.
UN officials jumped into the debate
As the controversy escalated, UN official Vanessa Fraser intervened. Fraser told Dannon to avoid making personal attacks. He also said that the report is based on evidence.
Danon became more angry at this. He told Frazier to keep quiet. Dannon said,

We are a member country of the United Nations and you are an employee of the United Nations. Now you will remain silent. Both you and this shameful report of yours will remain silent…

Israel and Hamas also included in the list
In fact, every year the United Nations releases a list of countries, armies and armed groups that are accused of serious sexual violence during conflict. This time Israel was included in this list for the first time. Along with this, Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups were also kept in the list.
According to this report released on May 29-
- Allegations of sexual violence and sexual abuse involving Israeli detention centers have emerged during the Gaza War. The allegations were against some officials of the Israeli army, police and prison service.
- Incidents like rape, gang rape, forced stripping have been mentioned. Charges have been leveled against some officials of the Israeli army, police and prison service.
- There were 31 confirmed cases of sexual violence by Israeli security forces against Palestinians. The victims included 14 men, 7 women, 9 boys and 1 girl.
Vanessa Fraser said the report is based on verified evidence.
Fraser is the representative for children and armed conflict. She works on issues related to children and armed conflict. They released a separate report this week. This report mentions alleged violations against Palestinian children.
The report warned that some Israeli settler groups could also be added to the blacklist. Israel is already included in the list of shame of this report.
When Pramila Patton’s report was released last month, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon called it a new low. At the same time, Israel’s Foreign Ministry had announced that it would end all relations with United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres. Guterres’ 10-year term ends at the end of this year.
