While taking down Balabhadra ji, the sevadars slipped on the slope of the chariot and the idol fell on them. 9 sevadars were injured in this. 5 are being treated in the hospital. There is no damage to the idol.

An injured sevak said that the accident happened due to some problem in the rope-like material tied to the idol. Two people who were admitted to the hospital were later discharged and joined the rituals. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed concern over the incident and wished the injured sevaks a speedy recovery.

He directed Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan to immediately go to Puri and take appropriate action. Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida also went to Puri. She said that we will report to the Chief Minister for further action.

Soon after the incident, worship of the brother-sister Lord Jagannath, Goddess Subhadra and Lord Balabhadra resumed and all the idols were taken inside the Gundicha temple, which is believed to be their birthplace. The deities will stay here till July 15. On the same day, Bahuda Jatra or the return festival will be celebrated. On the same day, all the three idols will return to the Srimandir.

The atmosphere changes around Gundicha temple
Gundicha temple is just 3 km away from Puri’s Jagannath temple. Every year, whenever Mahaprabhu arrives here, preparations for the arrival of the Lord begin in every house within a radius of 500 meters of Gundicha temple a month before that. People become pure Satvik. They stop eating non-vegetarian food. For seven days of Rath Yatra, every member of the house wears new clothes and starts the day by eating the Abhada Prasad received after the worship of Mahaprabhu.

Why is Rath Yatra for two days this year?
According to Dr. Jyoti Prasad, the Panchangkar of Jagannath Temple, every year the Jagannath Rath Yatra is of one day, but in 2024 it is of two days. Earlier in 1971, this Yatra was of two days. This happened due to the reduction in the dates.

Actually, every year Lord Jagannath is given a bath on the full moon day of Jyeshtha month. After this, he falls ill and remains ill for 15 days of Ashadha Krishna Paksha, during which he does not give darshan.

On the 16th day, the Lord is adorned and one gets the glimpse of his youthful form. After this, the Rath Yatra begins from Ashadh Shukla Dwitiya.

This year, due to the decrease in the dates, there were only 13 days in the Ashadh Krishna Paksha instead of 15. Due to this, the 16th day of the Lord’s recovery was on Dwitiya. Rath Yatra is also taken out on this date.

On July 7, after the Lord’s recovery, the worship rituals continued throughout the day. It was necessary to conduct the Rath Yatra on this day. Because of this, the Rath Yatra was started on the evening of July 7. The Yatra is carried out only till sunset. Therefore, the chariot was pulled only 5 meters on Sunday.
