An 18-year-old NEET aspirant allegedly died by suicide in Ahmedabad’s New Ranip area on Thursday, just three days before the medical entrance examination’s re-test scheduled for June 21. Police said the student, identified as Kahan Patel, jumped from a residential building where he lived, and the reason behind the extreme step remains unclear. Patel, a resident of New Ranip area, was preparing for the upcoming NEET examination. According to police, he sustained fatal internal injuries after jumping from the balcony of his flat.
Speaking about the incident, senior police officer Rana Digvijay Singh said cops received a call at Sabarmati Police Station on Thursday morning that a teenage boy had jumped from the balcony of his residence. Police have registered an accidental death case and launched an investigation. Officials said the family is yet to be questioned and investigators will also examine the student’s laptop and speak to his classmates as part of the probe.
The incident comes days before the NEET re-examination, which is being conducted after the National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the earlier test held on May 3 amid allegations of a paper leak. The controversy sparked nationwide protests and is currently under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
ANOTHER NEET ASPIRANT DIES BY SUICIDE AHEAD OF JUNE 21 EXAM
In a separate incident, a 23-year-old medical aspirant, Riya Kumari, was found dead in her room in Dehradun’s Patel Nagar area earlier this week. According to police, she left behind a note apologising to her parents and blaming her own “incompetence” for the decision.
Police said the incident came to light when her mother went to call her for breakfast and received no response. Family members later forced open the door and found her hanging. Investigators recovered a note in which she expressed remorse and said nobody else was responsible for her decision.
Riya had scored more than 96 per cent in her Class 12 examinations and was pursuing the final semester of her BSc degree. She had recently appeared for NEET and was preparing for the June 21 re-test. According to police, preliminary findings suggest frustration over not achieving the desired results in her studies may have been a contributing factor.
Her father, a Kargil war veteran, told police there had been no visible signs of depression. Authorities have completed inquest proceedings and are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
