A power outage disrupted viewing of Portugal’s FIFA World Cup 2026 clash against DR Congo in Kanjoor, Ernakulam district of Kerala on Wednesday night. And frustrated football fans registered their protest by marching towards the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).

A group of Cristiano Ronaldo fans decided to gather at the nearby KSEB field office and followed the match together on a mobile phone.

Television footage showed the young men seated inside the KSEB office, watching the Portugal–DR Congo fixture while voicing their protest. At one point, they even invited the on-duty official to join them.

They questioned the timing of the outage, saying, “Why are you cutting power when people are watching football in TVs in their homes? What is the need to carry out load shedding now when everyone in Kerala is watching the world cup?

“We have come here in protest and we will come and watch the game here tomorrow also. We will do that every day when there is a power cut. We can all sit together and watch the game,” they said.

A KSEB official in Kanjoor confirmed that a protest took place at the field office but said no untoward incident occurred. The board did not offer further comment.

The episode comes shortly after KSEB warned that Kerala may face restricted power supply between 6 pm and midnight until June 30 due to a widening electricity shortfall driven by rising demand and reduced availability across the country.
