Iran said preparations for talks in Geneva remained on track, while officials reviewed the possibility of elevating the signing ceremony to the presidential level.

Iran is considering a proposal for the presidents of Iran and the United States to personally sign a landmark agreement aimed at ending the Middle East conflict, Tehran’s foreign ministry said, ahead of a planned ceremony in Switzerland. Iranian Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said preparations for talks in Geneva remained on track, while officials reviewed the possibility of elevating the signing ceremony to the presidential level.
“So far, our plans for the Geneva meeting have not changed,” he said, adding, “Regarding the signing of the memorandum of understanding, one idea is that it be done by the presidents of the two countries, which is currently under review.”
Iran had previously indicated that it would be represented at the signing by Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, while the United States was expected to send Vice President JD Vance.
The comments come after US President Donald Trump announced that Washington and Tehran had reached an agreement that he said fulfilled all of the United States’ objectives in the conflict. Speaking after the G7 summit in France, Trump said the deal would end the current hostilities, reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping and ensure that Iran would never acquire a nuclear weapon.
“On Sunday, we reached an agreement with Iran that achieves everything we set out to accomplish, everything and much moreIran cannot have a nuclear weapon, they can’t develop it, buy it, they can never have a nuclear weapon,” the US President said.
Trump said world leaders briefed on the agreement had welcomed its terms and defended the settlement as necessary to avert wider economic disruption.
“The one thing I didn’t want to see is I didn’t want to see economic catastrophe,” he said, adding, “If you kept this going, that could have happened.”
The US President also pointed to positive market reactions to discussions of a ceasefire and peace agreement, arguing that investors viewed diplomacy favorably.
Despite the breakthrough, the agreement has faced criticism from some of Trump’s political allies and foreign policy commentators, who argue that the deal grants significant concessions to Tehran in exchange for ending the conflict and reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Trump has repeatedly described it as a comprehensive settlement that addresses U concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme while bringing an end to the war. The accord is currently scheduled to be signed in Switzerland on Friday, although Trump has suggested the ceremony could take place earlier if final arrangements are completed.
