Former Real Madrid and Portugal star defender Pepe could be reunited with compatriot Jose Mourinho as the latter returns to the Santiago Bernabeu for a second spell incharge of the club following Florentino Perez’ victory in the presidential elections.
Pepe, who played under Mourinho during his first spell at the Capital City club, could join the gaffer’s staff as an assistant coach when Mourinho return to the helm of Los Blancos.
Perez was re-elected President of Real Madrid following Sunday’s vote, with the 79-year-old narrowly defeating challenger Enrique Riquelme in what was the club’s first genuinely contested election in nearly 20 years.
Perez’s victory is expected to usher in a wave of changes at Los Blancos, who are determined to end their barren run after going two consecutive seasons without a trophy.
The most significant change is set to be the return of the “Special One” to the dugout, with Inter full-back Denzel Dumfries and Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate also part of the planned overhaul.
Real Madrid are widely expected to bring back Jose Mourinho for a second spell in charge, a move closely linked to Perez’s re-election campaign.
Mourinho, who has collected silverware with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Roma, most recently managed Benfica, the club where he first began his coaching career in 2000. In his latest stint, he guided the Portuguese side to a third-place league finish in a season in which they remained unbeaten.
The 63-year-old, who previously led Madrid from 2010 to 2013, is anticipated to be officially presented after the Presidential process is completed. His first tenure in the Spanish capital was fiery and controversial, and reports suggest he has now agreed a three-year deal to return as head coach of Los Blancos.
Benfica have confirmed that Real Madrid will pay them compensation of 15 million Euros if Mourinho finalises his move back to the Santiago Bernabeu.
Madrid are also reported to have wrapped up deals for Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries and French centre-back Ibrahima Konate, as the capital club look to reinforce their squad for the coming season. This push comes after they were forced to watch bitter rivals Barcelona thrive under German coach Hansi Flick, securing back-to-back league titles.
