If there is one group that feels more balanced than it first appears, it is Group D.
The United States enter the 2026 FIFA World Cup carrying the weight of expectation. Playing on home soil, Mauricio Pochettino’s side know a deep run could be transformative for the sport in the country. With Christian Pulisic leading a talented generation and matches scheduled in familiar surroundings, the Americans are widely viewed as favourites to progress.
But Group D is far from straightforward.
USA Carry the Spotlight
On paper, the draw could have been much tougher for the hosts. The Americans avoided several traditional heavyweights and instead face Paraguay, Australia and Turkey. Still, pressure can be as dangerous as any opponent.
Pulisic remains the focal point of the team, bringing leadership, creativity and big-game experience. Around him is a young squad eager to make its mark on the biggest stage.
The biggest challenge for Pochettino may be managing expectations as much as tactics.
Turkey’s Golden Generation
Many observers believe Turkey could be the dark horse of the group.
Returning to the World Cup for the first time since their remarkable third-place finish in 2002, the Turks arrive armed with one of the most exciting young squads in the tournament. Real Madrid star Arda Güler and Juventus forward Kenan Yıldız headline a team packed with attacking quality.
If Turkey can find consistency, they have the talent to not only advance but potentially top the group.
Paraguay and Australia Ready to Spoil the Party
Paraguay arrive with renewed confidence under Gustavo Alfaro. The Argentine coach has transformed a struggling side into one of South America’s surprise success stories through defensive organisation, discipline and resilience.
Australia, meanwhile, continue to embrace the underdog role. The Socceroos may lack household names, but their work ethic, structure and tournament experience make them difficult opponents. They have built a reputation for outperforming expectations on football’s biggest stage.
X-Factor: Pulisic vs Güler
The standout individual storyline could be a battle between two elite playmakers.
Pulisic and Güler are among the most creative players in the group and both will shoulder enormous responsibility for their nations. Their performances could ultimately determine who finishes top.
