Billionaire entrepreneur and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has drawn attention to India’s declining fertility rate, warning that the country’s birth rate has fallen “below the replacement level.”

The remarks came amid growing discussion around India’s demographic trajectory after recent estimates showed the country’s Total Fertility Rate (TFR) had declined to 1.9 births per woman. A fertility rate of 2.1 is generally considered the replacement level required for a population to maintain its size from one generation to the next without immigration.
The data was highlighted by AF Post, which cited an article published by The Economist arguing that India’s population growth could slow significantly in the coming decades and may eventually begin to decline.
India currently has a population of more than 1.46 billion people and overtook China in 2023 to become the world’s most populous nation. However, demographic experts say population size alone does not guarantee long-term growth, particularly when birth rates continue to fall.
Why Is India’s Fertility Rate Declining?
According to the experts, several factors have contributed to the steady decline in fertility rates across India. Rising education levels, especially among women, increased urbanisation, greater participation of women in the workforce, delayed marriages, and higher living costs have all influenced family planning decisions.
The trend is particularly visible in major cities. According to the data cited online, Delhi’s fertility rate has fallen to 1.2 births per woman—well below the replacement level and lower than that of several developed countries facing population decline.
What Does a Falling Birth Rate Mean?
A fertility rate below replacement level does not immediately lead to a shrinking population. Because India still has a relatively young population, the total number of people may continue to grow for some time. However, over the long term, fewer births can reshape the country’s demographic structure.
A declining birth rate typically results in a smaller share of young people and a growing proportion of elderly citizens. This demographic shift can create challenges for governments, businesses and social welfare systems.
