An African couple was among the 21 people who lost their lives in the massive fire that broke out on June 3 at the Flourish Stay Hotel in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar. Rescuers found their bodies in the bathroom, where both were embracing each other.

The woman was sitting on the toilet seat, while her husband was sitting on a nearby chair. Both of them held each other tightly and the woman’s head was resting on her husband’s shoulder. According to local people, the couple had come to a nearby hospital for IVF treatment.

Jenje N., a 61-year-old Liberian woman, was among the 21 people who lost their lives in the fire. Roland’s body has also been identified. The woman’s ailing husband was already admitted in Max Hospital. A relative reached AIIMS mortuary and identified the body of the woman.

Hotel owner said during interrogation – Everything works in Delhi

The main accused in the accident and hotel owner Lavkesh Bajaj was sent to 4-day police custody by the court on Thursday. When Bajaj was asked how he was running 25 rooms with a license for 6 rooms? There was also no fire NOC.

On this he said- ‘Everything works in Delhi.’ Police sources said that this hotel was being run by three partners together. They have many hotels and guest houses all over Delhi. The license of the Tourism Department was in the name of Jai Mishra.

Bajaj made many more shocking revelations during the interrogation. According to the police, Bajaj had passed near the burning building in his car when the fire broke out. The accused told that he had run away due to fear. He did not help anyone and wandered around the city the whole day.

5 major reasons for accidents

  • The windows were closed. There was no ventilation. There was only one way to go. The space was quite narrow. There was no arrangement for external fire escape (emergency exit). Such buildings become like ‘chimneys’, smoke and heat reach the top within a few seconds.
  • Eyewitnesses said the sensor-based main gate was closed. Because of this people could not go out.
  • Essential fire safety equipment like smoke detectors, fire alarms and sprinkler systems were not working.
  • Several heavy LPG cylinders were kept on the ground floor, for which there was no fire-isolation protection arrangement.

445 deaths due to fire in Delhi since January 2021

In the country’s capital Delhi, 6,466 people have died in accidents from January 2021 to May 2026, while 14,857 people have been injured. Of these, 445 people died and 3193 people were injured in the fire. In other incidents, 6021 people died and 11,718 people were injured.
