The composition of Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar’s first Cabinet has sparked criticism after no woman was included among the 13 ministers sworn in on Wednesday. While the new Cabinet is being viewed as an attempt to strike a balance among various factions, castes and communities within the Congress, the absence of female representation has drawn attention from senior party leader and former Governor Margaret Alva.
Expressing her disappointment, Alva said she had hoped to see at least one woman minister in the new government.
“Congratulations to DK Shivakumar Ji on being sworn in as Karnataka CM. I wish him & his team success. I would have loved to have seen at least ONE Congress woman in the new Karnataka Cabinet that was sworn in. Deeply disappointed that there isn’t,” she wrote in a post on X.
DK Shivakumar Announces Free Bus Pass For Students
Senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar was sworn in as Karnataka’s Chief Minister on Wednesday, formally ending a prolonged leadership tussle with his predecessor Siddaramaiah and marking a new chapter for the party in the state. Senior leader G Parameshwara took oath as Deputy Chief Minister.
Alongside Shivakumar and Parameshwara, 13 ministers were inducted into the Cabinet, including KH Muniyappa, KJ George, MB Patil, Ramalinga Reddy, Satish Jarkiholi, Krishna Byregowda, Priyank Kharge, UT Khader, Eshwar Khandre, Yathindra Siddaramaiah, Byrathi Suresh and Sharan Prakash Patil.
Notably, 11 of the 13 ministers had served in the previous Siddaramaiah-led government. Siddaramaiah’s son and MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah was also among those inducted.
Soon after taking charge, Shivakumar chaired his first Cabinet meeting in the presence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The government announced a series of youth-focused initiatives, including free bus passes for students and the formation of 10,000 Bharat Jodo Yuva Sanghas aimed at promoting leadership skills and social harmony.
