Malviya Nagar fire LIVE Updates: A devastating fire in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Wednesday claimed at least 21 lives and left several others injured, triggering a massive rescue and relief operation in the congested Hauz Rani area.
Authorities said the blaze broke out in a bed-and-breakfast property identified as Flourish Stay, though initial reports had suggested the fire originated at the Lemon Green Restaurant located on the ground floor of the building.
Officials said many of those killed were foreign nationals, primarily from Central Asian and African countries.
More than 40 people were rescued from the smoke-filled premises and rushed to nearby hospitals, where several victims were declared dead. Authorities fear the death toll could rise further as many of the injured remain in critical condition.
Eyewitness accounts from the scene painted a horrifying picture of panic and desperation as flames rapidly engulfed the structure.
According to officials, several people trapped on the upper floors jumped from the building onto mattresses spread out by residents in an attempt to save themselves.
Emergency response teams, including Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, DDMA personnel and ambulance services, rushed to the spot soon after the fire was reported in the morning.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said rescue and evacuation efforts were launched immediately, while Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Sandhu ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.
The exact cause of the fire remains unclear, though some local leaders claimed a suspected short circuit may have triggered the blaze.
