Is this set to be Michael Carrick’s first signing as Man United’s full-time manager?

The Red Devils have reportedly reached an agreement with Italian side Atalanta to sign Brazilian midfielder Éderson in a deal worth an initial €40.5 million (£35 million), with add-ons potentially taking the total package to €45 million.

The 26-year-old is expected to become the first signing of the club’s new era under manager Michael Carrick, who identified Éderson as a key target alongside director of football Jason Wilcox as part of United’s midfield rebuild.

The move comes following the departure of Casemiro, whose contract expired this summer. United viewed Éderson as the ideal replacement, thanks to his ability to operate as a holding midfielder while also contributing box-to-box energy and defensive intelligence.

As per The Athletic and Sky Sportspersonal terms have already been agreed, with Éderson set to sign a contract until June 2030, including an option for a further 12 months. Although the transfer window officially opens on 15 June, the move is expected to be finalised early next month once the player completes his medical.

Éderson has built an impressive reputation during his time in Bergamo after joining Atalanta from Salernitana in January 2022. The Brazilian previously featured for Cruzeiro, Corinthians and Fortaleza before making the move to Europe.

At international level, Éderson has earned three caps for Brazil national football team since making his debut against Mexico in 2024. He was initially included in Carlo Ancelotti’s preliminary 55-man World Cup squad but did not make the final selection.

United’s midfield overhaul may not stop there. The club remain interested in Mateus Fernandes, although West Ham United are seeking a significant fee. They also admire Elliot Anderson, but the midfielder is believed to favour a move to Manchester City.

Beyond midfield, United are also exploring options at left-back, with Lewis Hall among the names under consideration, while the club continues its search for attacking support for Benjamin Sesko.
