Kanpur petrol pump under probe after Charan Singh alleges 52 litres were billed in a Volkswagen Virtus with a 45-litre tank, sparking fraud and delay claims.

A new car owner in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, was left stunned when he received a bill from a local petrol pump for filling around 52 litres of fuel in a vehicle that has the maximum tank capacity of 45 litres. The incident has prompted an official probe.
Recently, the vehicle’s owner, Charan Singh, had bought a Volkswagen Virtus and then stopped at a petrol station with the fuel indicator showing a near-empty tank. He had asked the employees to fill the tank to its maximum capacity.
India Today quoted Singh saying that the attendants initially pumped around 40 litres of petrol before pausing. Upon questioning the reason for stopping, they reportedly told him that large quantities are filled in separate instalments and the machine could not dispense more than 45 litres at one time. Following this, the attendants resumed filling the vehicle.
However, moments after that, a dispute arose when Singh was handed a receipt showing that approximately 52 litres of petrol had been dispensed. He argued that the figure was not possible as the vehicle had only a 45-litre capacity.
He further told media that a representative from Volkswagen was summoned to the petrol station who confirmed that the Virtus model could not accommodate more than 45 litres of fuel under normal circumstances.
Taking reports of the technical assessment, Singh lodged a formal complaint and accused the petrol pump of operating a systematic fraud.
District Administration Orders Probe
After the complaint surfaced, the district administration ordered an investigation into the petrol station’s dispensing units.
India Today reported that officials have inspected the fuel dispensing machines which revealed that the machines were functioning okay.
Meanwhile, Singh has alleged that authorities did not immediately inspect the petrol pump and it was finally done after one-and-a-half days. He said the local officials cited numerous reasons for the delay such as being away in Lucknow and occupied with other work.
