The Income Tax Department has made the Excel utility of ITR Form-2 live for the assessment year 2026-27 (Financial Year 2025-26). Now taxpayers can prepare their tax calculations by downloading it from the department’s portal. Earlier, the department had started the facility of ITR-1 and ITR-4 on May 17.
The file will be prepared offline, then upload it on the portal.
Now you can fill your tax data on Excel sheet even without internet. After filling the form completely, a ‘JSON’ file will be created, which you will have to upload on the Income Tax Portal. If you are filing return for the first time, you will have to register on the portal through your PAN and Aadhaar.

July 31st is the last date, if there is delay then fine will be imposed
The last date for filing returns for general taxpayers is July 31, 2026. Whereas for some people of business class (ITR-3 and 4) it is 31st August. If you miss the deadline by July 31, you can file a ‘belated return’ by paying the penalty by December 31.
Expert Tip: Do not file returns before June 15
If you are employed, do not be in a hurry. Companies have time till May 31 to submit TDS data. After this it takes 10-15 days for it to be updated in your Form 26AS and AIS. If you file the return before June 15, there is a risk of data mismatch, due to which your refund may get stuck.

Check these 3 things before filing returns
- Form 16: Please take it from your company.
- AIS/TIS: Login to the portal and check whether the complete account of your bank interest and share market is correct or not.
- registration: Make sure that your mobile number is linked to Aadhaar and PAN so that e-verification can be done easily.
