Britain’s Health Minister Wes Streeting recently resigned, citing loss of confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Keir Starmer. In the letter he said that Starmer would not be able to win the next election for the Labor Party. This is being linked to Streeting’s ambition to become Prime Minister. Wes Streeting is considered a very clever player in British politics. Analyst David Jeffrey explains that Streeting has long had a desire to become PM. In a show in 2018, he even declared himself Prime Minister after 10 years. Now he seems very close to turning that claim into reality. Streeting does not consider himself a typical politician. His life has been one of great struggle. Coming from a poor working-class family in Tower Hamlets, Streeting worked in shops to pay for college and university. He revealed in his 2023 book ‘One Boy, Two Bills and a Fry Up’ that his grandfather had gone to jail for armed robbery. He studied history at Selwyn College, Cambridge University, and became an MP for the first time in 2015. Clashes with doctors: Wes Streeting has a strong track record as Health Minister. They set a target of treating 65% of patients within 18 weeks by March 2026 and recorded the biggest reduction in Britain’s public health service (NHS) waiting lists in 17 years. However, due to the doctors’ strikes, he also became the target of the left wing of the party. To get the leadership of the Labor Party, he will have to garner the support of this leftist membership, which is considered even more radical than PM Starmer. If Streeting becomes the next Prime Minister of Britain, London-Washington relations will be under watch, as he has been a vocal critic of US President Donald Trump. During Trump’s first term (2017-2021), Streeting even called him a ‘disgusting’ person. Similarly, on Trump’s claim of paracetamol during pregnancy and autism, Streeting has said that people should listen to British doctors and scientists instead of ‘Trump’s nonsense’.
