A month after carrying out its biggest retrenchment exercise, India’s largest IT services firm Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reportedly asked managers to place around 5% of employees in the company’s lowest performance category during the latest appraisal cycle, raising fresh concerns among staff.

According to a report by Mintthe instruction was communicated through an internal email sent by a TCS HR executive to one of the business unit heads in April.

“Please review critically and share the list of associates who can be considered for Band D, thereby meeting the agreed 5% distribution,” the email said, as quoted by Mint.

According to the report, citing executives aware of the matter, business unit heads ultimately classified nearly 3% employees, or around 17,500 people, as underperformers.

The development comes shortly after TCS laid off about 2% of its workforce, or nearly 12,200 employees, in what was described as the company’s largest retrenchment exercise. The report noted that many employees affected in the layoffs had received similar ratings earlier, increasing anxiety among staff over the latest appraisal cycle.

The reported move has once again triggered debate within India’s IT sector over performance-linked workforce management, especially at a time when companies are facing pressure from slowing global demand, automation and increasing use of artificial intelligence tools.
