Udhayanidhi had given the statement ending Sanatan in Tamil Nadu Assembly on 12th May. CM Vijay was also present there at that time.
Former Tamil Nadu Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin clarified his statement on ending Sanatan after 2 days. Udhayanidhi said- My statement is being misunderstood. I am not against people going to temples, but the discrimination based on caste there has to be ended.
Udhayanidhi Stalin said in the Assembly on May 12 that Sanatan Dharma should be abolished. It divides people. Earlier in 2023 also he had described Sanatan as dengue and malaria. After this, the Supreme Court reprimanded him in March 2025.

Udhayanidhi gave clarification on social media, said- I am not afraid of criticism
Udhayanidhi wrote on social media
But I am not afraid of such criticisms. The Dravidian movement has always progressed amidst opposition. So I just want to clarify one small thing. When I say that Sanatan should end, it does not mean that one should not go to the temple.
This means that not only in temples but also in society, all people should get equal rights. I am talking about ending the thinking which divides people into upper and lower castes.
I am expressing the same views which were expressed by Periyar, Ambedkar, Anna and Karunanidhi. We are not against anyone’s belief in God. But we will strongly oppose inequality and oppression. Thiruvalluvar had said- All living beings are equal by birth, this is our path.
2 September 2023: Udhayanidhi had described Sanatan Dharma as dengue and malaria.
Udhayanidhi Stalin had given a statement against Sanatan Dharma in a program on 2 September 2023. Udhayanidhi said- Sanatan Dharma is like mosquito, dengue, fever, malaria and corona, which cannot only be opposed, but it is necessary to eliminate them.
As the controversy escalated, Udhayanidhi said that I am not against Hindu religion but Sanatan Pratha. Voices have been raised against Sanatana Dharma in Tamil Nadu for the last 100 years. We will continue to speak against it for the next 200 years. Ambedkar and Periyar have also spoken about it on many occasions in the past.
It was only due to the strong opposition of Sanatan Dharma that women were able to come out of the house and social evils like Sati ended. He said- In fact, DMK itself was founded on principles that oppose such social evils.
Madras High Court had said – Udhayanidhi’s words are like genocide

Madras High Court on Wednesday said that Tamil Nadu Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin’s remarks against Sanatan come under the ambit of hate speech. The court made this comment regarding Stalin’s three year old statement.
Words like destroying Sanatan do not just mean protest, but also question the existence of those who believe in it, which comes under the category of hate speech.
This statement of Stalin indicates genocide or cultural genocide. The Tamil word “Sanathana Ozhippu” means not just to oppose, but to completely eradicate.
Udhayanidhi was also reprimanded by the Supreme Court
The Supreme Court had reprimanded Udhayanidhi Stalin on 4 March 2025. The Supreme Court had said that Stalin had misused his powers. Stalin is not a common man. He should have thought about the consequences of the statement.
