The new leader will become the 13th person to hold Kerala’s top post since the state was formed in 1956.
The Congress high command is likely to announce its decision on Thursday, nearly 10 days after the Assembly election results were declared. The delay has kept the camps of the three main contenders on edge – AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan and senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala.
CLP Meeting Scheduled In Thiruvananthapuram Today
The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting is set to take place at the KPCC headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday afternoon. According to a statement issued by KPCC chief Sunny Joseph, the meeting will begin at 1 p.m. on May 14 and will elect the legislative leader.
The gathering is expected to play a key role in the process of naming the UDF’s chief ministerial candidate for Kerala.
Sources said Kerala leaders who were called to Delhi by the Congress leadership during important discussions on Tuesday shared their views on the choice of Chief Minister. During the consultations, the names of Venugopal, Satheesan and Chennithala reportedly figured prominently as the high command continued its deliberations.
UDF Comes Back To Power
The Congress-led UDF secured a major victory in the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, winning 102 out of 140 seats. The result marked a historic comeback for the alliance after a decade out of power.
The Left Democratic Front (LDF), meanwhile, managed to win only 35 seats in the Assembly elections.
