I’ll hopefully be there: Mitchell Starc eyes 2027 ODI World Cup

Mitchell Starc says the thrill of the competition continues to fuel him as the veteran Australian fast bowler eyes extending his international career and remains open to featuring in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The 36-year-old left-arm pacer, Australia’s third-highest wicket-taker across formats with 759 scalps behind only Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath, retired from T20 internationals last September in a bid to prolong his career in Tests and one-day cricket.

The next ODI World Cup is scheduled to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October-November 2027.

“I’m still very competitive and that’s what keeps me going,” Starc, who has already won the trophy twice, told Reuters. “Playing for Australia alongside some of my closest mates is special. I enjoy the hard work and I still love competing, so cricket continues to be fun.”

Despite ongoing elbow and shoulder niggles, Starc said his body has coped well with the rigours of international cricket.

“There’s always something to manage,” he said. “My elbow and shoulder are still being looked after, but there’s probably a little less strain now that I’m away from T20 internationals. “After 16 years, I’m still going well and hopefully there are a few more years left in me.”

Starc, who debuted for Australia in 2010, is currently representing Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, where the franchise sits eighth in the 10-team standings. He was recently named player of the series in Australia’s 4-1 Ashes triumph over England.

“2027 is still a long way away, but hopefully I’ll get there,” Starc said. “A World Cup is always a major goal for any cricketer. “I’ve moved on from T20 internationals, but I’m still enjoying my cricket. I don’t put timelines on things, I’ll just keep assessing how the body feels and where my cricket is at.”
