After the formation of BJP government in West Bengal, major changes have started at the administrative level. Retired IAS officer Subrata Gupta has been appointed advisor to Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari. An official notification in this regard was issued by the state government on Saturday. Subrata Gupta, a 1990 batch IAS officer of Bengal cadre, was appointed Special Role Observer by the Election Commission during the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026.
After the successful completion of the election process, the Election Commission on Thursday relieved him of his responsibility. west bengal In the notification issued by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, it has been said that the Governor has approved the appointment of retired IAS Dr. Subrata Gupta as advisor to the Chief Minister of West Bengal with immediate effect. According to government officials, Subrata Gupta’s administrative experience will help the new government in policy and governance related matters.
Subrata Gupta has long administrative experience
Dr. Subrata Gupta is a resident of Bengal. As a special role observer of the Central Election Commission, he had played a huge responsibility in West Bengal, from the special in-depth revision of the voter list till the completion of the assembly elections. The Commission had appointed him as ‘Special Role Observer’ for West Bengal in November 2025, to oversee the ‘Special Intensive Revision’ (SIR) of the electoral rolls ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Subrata Gupta has 35 years of administrative experience. He has handled 27 different responsibilities during his service period. He has a good understanding of Bengal. He has held many administrative responsibilities in the state during the Left and TMC governments.
IAS Shantanu Bala will be private secretary to CM
Along with this, the Private Secretary to the State Government has appointed 2017 batch IAS officer Shantanu Bala as the Private Secretary to the Chief Minister. Shantanu Bala was earlier posted as Additional District Magistrate in South 24 Parganas district. Officials say that these appointments have been made as part of the reorganization of the Chief Minister’s Office after the change of government. Both the officers have been instructed to assume new responsibilities with immediate effect.
The swearing-in of the new government took place on 9 May at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata and Subhendu Adhikari became the first BJP Chief Minister in the state. Before this, the last leader from outside Kolkata to become the Chief Minister was Ajay Kumar Mukherjee, whose tenure ended in June 1971.
