Crystal Palace booked their place in a first-ever European final after defeating Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 at Selhurst Park on Thursday night, completing a dominant 5-2 aggregate victory in the UEFA Conference League semi-finals.

The Premier League side, competing in Europe for the first time in their history, will now face Rayo Vallecano in the final in Leipzig on May 27. The achievement marks another milestone in what has become a remarkable era under manager Oliver Glasner.

“It’s pretty incredible, honestly, to get into a European competition with Crystal Palace, never mind make the final,” Palace goalkeeper and captain Dean Henderson told TNT Sports. “You see the connection between the players and the supporters, it’s fantastic.”

Crystal Palace vs Shakhtar Donetsk – How It Happened?

Holding a comfortable advantage from the first leg in Poland, Palace settled quickly despite Shakhtar’s bright start. The hosts thought they had taken an early lead through Yeremy Pino, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

The breakthrough eventually arrived midway through the first half when Adam Wharton’s powerful effort was parried by goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk, before Daniel Muñoz’s follow-up deflected off Pedro Henrique and into the net.

Shakhtar responded through Eguinaldo, whose composed finish briefly reignited hope for the visitors. However, Palace regained control after the interval when Ismaila Sarr converted Tyrick Mitchell’s cross from close range for his ninth goal of the tournament.

“First trophy in 120 years last year and we are trying to get another for the fans,” Wharton told TNT Sports. “You get goosebumps, it’s incredible. This is the best Selhurst Park has been in my two years here. Unbelievable atmosphere and you can tell how much it means to south London.”

Glasner, who will leave the club after the final, reflected emotionally on the achievement.

“We always talked before, this is why, when we were little boys, we always wanted to become professional football players, and I told the players this is the reward we get, and this is the reward you can’t buy.”
