Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sanchez have donated about Rs 2322 crore to make the fashion world pollution free. This amount will be spent on lab-made fibres, threads made from bacteria and clothes made from agricultural waste. This is an emotional decision for Lauren. Due to poverty, she sewed her own prom dress. Now she is helping those scientists who are changing the traditional methods of preparing clothes. The goal of this fund is to deliver eco-friendly clothes to customers in 3-5 years. This will reduce the fashion industry’s dependence on polluting synthetic materials and fossil fuels. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Bezos is the third richest person in the world with a net worth of ₹26.45 lakh crore. Lauren’s childhood was spent amidst struggles. She did not have money to buy an expensive dress for her high school graduation party (prom). She learned tailoring from her grandmother and designed a red puff-sleeve dress herself. To earn money, she used to serve coffee and do housekeeping with her grandmother. But now they are not limited to just wearing expensive gowns. They are also deciding what clothes will be made of in the future. Their donation will not only help in saving the environment, but will also bring innovations in the fashion world that will make the production of clothes completely safe. Sanchez has been given the grant to shape the future of fashion. With this, research will be done on the genetics of threads like silk and cotton prepared from industrial waste. Bezos and Lauren are supporting scientists who are finding alternatives to traditional and polluting methods of making clothes. Synthetic materials like polyester are used extensively in the fashion industry. These harm the environment. Amazon is the world’s largest clothing retailer, so Sanchez’s move is considered important to reduce pollution and make fashion safe. Currently, making eco-friendly clothes from mushrooms and sea waste is expensive, now the prices will reduce. Sanchez’s donation will help five major institutions. The assistance amount from Bezos Earth Fund will be given to five institutions like Columbia University, UC Berkeley and Cotton Foundation. Till now, making eco-friendly clothes from mushrooms and sea waste has been quite expensive. With the help of the Bezos couple, mass production of these sustainable clothes will now be possible and the price will be lower.
