Now on Thursday (22 August), West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Kolkata rape-murder case. Mamata wrote to the PM that 90 cases of rape are reported every day in the country. Strict laws should be made to stop this.
Meanwhile, the Sealdah Court has given permission to the CBI to conduct a polygraph test of former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh.
A trainee doctor was raped and murdered on 9 August at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College. The police have arrested the main accused, Sanjay Roy. Doctors across the country are protesting over this.

West Bengal CM wrote to Modi- Current data shows that 90 rape cases are happening every day in the country. In most cases, the rape victim is murdered. This trend is frightening. It shakes the confidence and conscience of the society and the country. It is our duty to make sure that women feel safe.
For this, it is necessary that the central government makes a strict law, which provides for severe punishment to the person committing such heinous crime. Such cases should be run in fast track courts. To ensure that the victim gets justice quickly, it is necessary that the trial should be completed in 15 days.
5 big updates in the Kolkata rape-murder case
- The Calcutta High Court reprimanded the West Bengal government and asked why a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was not formed when the allegations of financial irregularities were first leveled against RG Kar Medical College. Akhtar Ali, former deputy superintendent of RG Kar, had appealed to the High Court regarding the ED investigation of former principal Sandeep Ghosh. A hearing was held on this today.
- Trinamool Congress (TMC) has welcomed the Supreme Court’s comment in the Kolkata rape-murder case. The apex court had said that the rape-murder of a trainee doctor should not be linked to politics. TMC also said that the CBI presented misleading facts.
- The Supreme Court on Thursday expressed concern that doctors are made to work in an inhumane manner. The apex court said that doctors sometimes have to work for up to 36 hours.
- BJP workers took out a march to surround the Health Bhawan of West Bengal. During this, the workers clashed with the police. Many workers were detained.
- Doctors of West Bengal have said that they will continue the strike. In fact, during the hearing on Thursday, the Supreme Court has asked the doctors to return to work. Doctors of Delhi AIIMS have withdrawn the strike.
