Seven-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz has said that he would miss the upcoming French Open due to a wrist injury, as his two-time title defence falls through. He also withdrew from last week’s Barcelona Open due to the same issue.

Alcaraz, 22, underwent tests to assess the severity of the problem and has withdrawn from the Italian Open and the French Open, both of which are played on clay.

Alcaraz played one match at the Barcelona Open but then withdrew in the Round of 16.

“We have decided that the most prudent thing to do is to be cautious and not participate in Rome or Roland Garros,” Alcaraz said in an Instagram post.

“It is a complicated moment for me, but I am sure we will come out stronger from this,” Alcaraz said.

The 22-year-old announced his withdrawal from the Madrid Open on April 17, heightening concerns over his potential participation in the French Open.

Alcaraz became the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam in January after winning the Australian Open. He holds a 22-3 record this season and has also lifted a title in Doha.

Ranked second in the world, Alcaraz lost top spot after his loss to arch-rival Jannik Sinner in the Monte Carlo Masters final on April 12.

Alcaraz, an expert on clay, won at Roland Garros in 2024 and 2025. He saved three championship points against Sinner in last year’s final.

Alcaraz won clay-court titles in Monte Carlo, Rome and Roland Garros last season and reached the final in Barcelona.

It opens the door for Sinner to complete his own career Grand Slam as well, winning each of the major tournaments at least once, with the French Open remaining the only title missing from his collection.
