Eta made history in the Bundesliga, but Union Berlin have ruled out a permanent men’s role — insisting she will mostly return to coach the women’s team next season.

Marie-Louise Eta made history this weekend, becoming the first woman to manage a men’s team in one of Europe’s top five leagues as she took charge of Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.
But even before her five-game interim stint began, the club made one thing crystal clear: she won’t be staying on.
Union president Dirk Zingler firmly shut down any speculation about Eta taking over the men’s side permanently, insisting she will return to coach the club’s women’s team next season, as per her existing contract.
“If (Eta) is really good, then she stays with the men, and if she’s not so good, she goes to the women. That’s not a discussion I’m having at all.”
Zingler doubled down on the stance, arguing that framing her stint as an audition would be unfair, not just to Eta, but to women’s football as a whole.
“It’s always a specialist, fact-based decision… if we associate her with this discussion, then we’re doing a disservice to her and to women’s soccer as a whole.”
Debut Defeat Adds Pressure
Eta’s first game in charge ended in a 2-1 loss to VfL Wolfsburg, with Union conceding early and struggling to recover.
The defeat leaves Union 11th in the table, still looking over their shoulder in the relegation battle after the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart.
With just a handful of games left, Eta’s task is clear: steady the ship. And amid the noise, she herself has refused to get caught up in the bigger narrative.
“Next year, in any case, I’ll still be a coach.”
A Bigger Debate Than Just One Job
Eta’s situation raises a complicated question: is this truly respect for women’s football, or a missed opportunity to let merit dictate the future?
While Union Berlin insist they are protecting the integrity of the women’s game, others may see it as a ceiling being quietly reinforced.
Either way, Eta will be looking to stay focused on the present and help Union Berlin retain their spot in the top division.
