PM Modi’s letter in 3 points
- When women are doing excellent work in many fields, it is absolutely right that women’s participation should also increase in legislative bodies.
- If the 2029 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections are held with full reservation for women, democracy will become even stronger.
- I urge you to write to your local MPs and encourage them as they take part in this historic Parliament session.

A look at the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill…
In September 2023, the Parliament passed the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Act’, commonly known as the ‘Women’s Reservation Act’. This was a major step towards increasing the representation of women in legislative bodies. In this Act, a provision was made to reserve one-third seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
Under the current law, reservation for women could not be implemented before 2034, as it was linked to the completion of the delimitation process after the 2027 census.
To implement this from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, changes were needed in the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Act’; Therefore, the government is holding a special session to pass amendments in the law.

What will happen if the amendment is passed in the Parliament session…
The government has planned two major amendments, including a separate delimitation bill. To decide reservation for women, it is necessary to pass both these bills as constitutional amendments. Maintaining the existing status quo, no provision has been made for OBC reservation, while SC/ST reservation will continue as before.
When the amendments to the ‘Women’s Reservation Act’ are passed, it will ensure that the number of Lok Sabha seats will increase to 816, out of which 273 seats will be reserved for women. The provision to give 33% reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies was brought by amending the Constitution in 2023.
