Producer Ekta Kapoor admitted she was left stunned when Akshay Kumar once returned his fee after one of their films underperformed. Speaking at the trailer launch of Bhooth Bangla, Kapoor revealed that the actor had called her personally and handed back a cheque, saying it was to compensate for her losses.
“I was in shock,” Kapoor said, recalling the moment. She added that in over three decades as a producer, she had never encountered such a gesture. According to her, Kumar’s action was both unexpected and rare in the film industry, where financial risks are typically absorbed by producers.
What exactly did Akshay Kumar do?
Kapoor shared that the incident took place after their earlier collaboration failed to perform at the box office. Without naming the film, she revealed that Kumar reached out to her directly. “He gave me a cheque and said this is money back for you—you’ve lost money,” she said, highlighting that no other actor had done this in her 31-year career.
However, Kapoor declined the offer and instead asked him to work with her again. That request, she said, eventually led to Bhooth Bangla.

Rather than accepting the cheque, Kapoor said she saw greater value in continuing their professional association. She told Kumar that a future collaboration would be more rewarding than a refund. The decision appears to have paid off, with the two now reuniting for the upcoming film.
The anecdote also underscored Kapoor’s long-standing desire to collaborate with Kumar again, which finally materialised with Bhooth Bangla.
What is Bhooth Bangla about?
Directed by Priyadarshan, Bhooth Bangla marks a reunion between the filmmaker and Kumar after several years. The horror-comedy revolves around a man who inherits a bungalow, only to discover it is haunted, along with the surrounding forest. His decision to marry in a village plagued by fear of a mysterious entity named Vadhusur sets off a series of chaotic events.
The film features an ensemble cast including Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Tabu and Wamiqa Gabbi. Kumar and Priyadarshan have previously collaborated on popular titles such as Hera Pheri, Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Garam Masala.
Produced by Kumar alongside Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor, the film was initially slated for release on April 10 but has now been postponed. It will arrive in cinemas on April 17, with paid previews beginning on the evening of April 16.
