Every year, toppers grab headlines. But some results feel different, they leave a lasting mark. When the JEE Main results were announced on April 2, 2017, conversations across the country gradually centered around one name: Kalpit Veerwal.
A student from Udaipur, he didn’t just secure AIR 1. He did something no one had ever done before, a perfect 360 out of 360.
Overnight, he went from an ordinary high school student to a national sensation. Headlines celebrated the “perfect scorer,” coaching institutes highlighted him as the ultimate success story, and many assumed his future was already written: IIT, a top placement, and a high-paying corporate career.
But Kalpit Veerwal had something else in mind.
Instead of following the predictable IIT-to-corporate route, he used the attention and opportunities that came with AIR 1 to explore a completely different path — one shaped by curiosity, experimentation, and freedom.
His journey after IIT became less about chasing a title and more about discovering what truly interested him.
THE DAY THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Nine years later, April 2, 2017 still stands out as the moment that quietly changed Kalpit’s life. What seemed like a routine exam day soon turned into a defining milestone.
He entered the test hall as just another student and walked out having made history, securing AIR 1 with a perfect 360/360 and suddenly finding himself in the national spotlight.
The achievement did more than secure the top rank. It brought visibility, opened doors, and offered him the freedom to explore opportunities beyond the conventional engineering path.
DID HE EVER WANT THE TRADITIONAL IIT CORPORATE ROUTE?
Interestingly, the typical IIT-to-corporate journey never appealed to him.
“The traditional corporate IIT route never appealed to me, and the popularity I enjoyed due to my rank helped me pursue so many different careers,” says Kalpit Veerwal.
While many peers prepared for placements and corporate jobs, Kalpit chose exploration over predictability.
WHAT DID HE DO AFTER IIT?
Over the years, his journey took several turns. Rather than sticking to one path, he explored multiple roles, as an educator and mentor, an entrepreneur, public speaker, investor, content creator, and traveller, documenting his experiences.
“Over the years, I’ve been an educator, built businesses, spoken across the country, invested, travelled,” he adds.
Each phase reflected a mindset focused on learning, trying, and evolving rather than following a fixed career path.
WHY DID HE SHIFT TOWARDS MUSIC?
In a surprising move, Kalpit recently stepped into music as a singer-songwriter and began releasing his own songs. For someone known for academic excellence, this transition seemed unexpected, but perfectly aligned with his philosophy of exploration.
“I’ve been focusing a lot more on investing and music lately, and you’ll hear more of my music this year,” he explains.
His reflections drew mixed but largely supportive reactions online. Some praised him for breaking stereotypes around IIT toppers, while others found his path inspiring for students who want to explore beyond traditional careers.
Many appreciated his honesty about experimenting with different roles and redefining success beyond corporate titles.
A DIFFERENT DEFINITION OF SUCCESS
Kalpit Veerwal’s story challenges one of India’s most deeply rooted assumptions, that academic excellence must lead to a corporate career. He achieved what lakhs of students dream of, yet chose curiosity over convention.
From educator to entrepreneur, investor to traveller, and now singer-songwriter, his journey shows that success doesn’t always follow a straight line. Sometimes, the real achievement isn’t just topping an exam, it’s having the courage to design your own path.
From scoring a perfect 360/360 to releasing music, Kalpit didn’t just set a record; he redefined expectations. His journey sends a clear message: even the highest rank doesn’t decide your destination, you do.
