Minister of State BL Verma said that the figures are based on the information on the website of the Registrar General of India. The scheme for rehabilitation of such children was started on October 23, 2023 and since then 2653 children have been rehabilitated. Of these, 1507 children were reunited with their parents or families. At the same time, 305 children were connected to Anganwadi centres. 206 children have been handed over to the Child Welfare Committee. Besides, 625 children have been provided the facility of enrollment in schools. The government said the department is already running a scheme for comprehensive rehabilitation of persons already engaged in begging. In which special attention is being given to children. In such a situation, there is no need to implement new laws or schemes at this time. Not a single beggar in the two Union Territories The Department of Social Justice and Empowerment has said in its report that not a single child was found involved in begging in the Union Territories of Dadra-Nagar Haveli and Andaman Nicobar Islands. At the same time, one child each in Lakshadweep and Sikkim, six in Mizoram, eight in Daman and Diu and nine in Puducherry were found involved in such activities.
