The web show ‘Maa Ka Sam’ has been released on the OTT platform Amazon Prime. This story presents the mother-son relationship from a new and modern perspective. The show has an interesting mix of emotion, humor and the thinking of today’s generation, where a son tries to find the right life partner for his single mother. In a special conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, the show’s starcast Mona Singh and Mihir Ahuja talked in detail about their characters, shooting experience, film journey and the important message being given to the society through this story. During this, Mona Singh also shared an interesting anecdote related to the film ‘Dhurandhar’, in which she had stopped actor Gaurav Gera from giving spoilers on the set itself. What was so special in the script of ‘Maa Ka Sam’ that you immediately said yes? Mona Singh- I found the most special thing about this show was its thinking. Generally we see the character of a mother in a fixed framework where she lives only for her children. But in this story the mother is shown as a human being, who has her own desires, her own dreams and who deserves a second chance in life. This is a very refreshing and progressive approach. Especially for single mothers, it is very important that they also get full right to live their life. I felt that this show can change people’s thinking and that is why I immediately said yes to it. Tell us in detail about your character ‘Agastya’ in the show? Mihir Ahuja- Agastya is a very smart and sensitive boy, who loves his mother very much. He wants that there should be no shortcomings in his mother’s life, especially in her personal life. He is a maths genius and tries to understand everything through logic and algorithms. With this in mind, he arranges dates for his mother, so that she can choose a perfect partner. This character is very interesting because a unique combination of emotion and logic is seen in it. In the show, your character goes on dates through a dating app. How do you see this concept? Mona Singh- The dates shown in the show are actually arranged by her son. Her son wants to understand which person will be right for his mother. This whole process is very interesting because it is a kind of experiment in it like we try different things in life and choose the right option. The same thing is happening here, the only difference is that it is about a mother’s love life, which is still considered a bit taboo in our society. I think this initiative is very important, because with this people will understand that a mother can also think about her own happiness. Any funny incident during shooting that you still remember? Mona Singh- A date scene shot in Delhi was very memorable and fun for me. In that scene, phone calls were coming continuously, sometimes from my mother and sometimes from the mother of the boy in front. The whole situation became so real and funny that we used to laugh while shooting. The actor in front also performed brilliantly, which made the scene even more fun. During that time I felt that perhaps such strange and funny dates happen with people in real life too. How important do you consider OTT platform for your career? Mona Singh- OTT has been a huge game changer for me. I feel like I got my second innings from here. The stories here are more real and layered, especially for the female characters. Whereas earlier the characters were shown only in the scope of positive or negative, on OTT they are presented with full depth and detail. If OTT had not happened, I might not have got the opportunity to play such roles. A spoiler related incident related to ‘Dhurandhar’ was also discussed. Tell me about that? Mona Singh- We were shooting in Amritsar, when Gaurav Gera started telling me the pictures and story related to the film Dhurandhar. I immediately stopped him and said that this should not be done at all. A lot of hard work goes into creating a story and character and every actor is bound by an NDA. I explained to him that it is wrong to share such information before release. It is also part of professional ethics that we maintain that trust. What was the biggest challenge during the shooting? Mihir Ahuja- The biggest challenge was the scenes related to maths. I had to do them in such a way that the audience felt that I was really a maths expert. For this I had to understand and practice many formulas and algorithms. We were properly guided on the set, so that we could do justice to our character. It was definitely a bit difficult, but it was also a good learning experience. Were there any funny experiences on the set regarding Gen-G relationship terms? Mona Singh- Yes, it was quite funny because both of us were not very familiar with these terms. Words like ‘situationship’, ‘ghosting’, ‘breadcrumbing’ were new to us. Their meanings were explained to us on the set, like it is taught in a class. This experience was quite interesting and it also helped me understand how today’s generation views relationships. Being an outsider, how was your journey in Bollywood? Mihir Ahuja- In the beginning everything was new for me because I had no background in the industry. I didn’t know where auditions were held or who to contact. I found my own way, took the help of Google and went to different places and gave auditions. There was a lot of struggle in the beginning, but gradually people noticed my work and started trusting me. Today I am very grateful for my journey.
