Earthquake tremors have been felt in North India at night. Light tremors of earthquake were felt in Delhi-NCR, Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana also. Its intensity on the Richter scale was 5.9. The epicenter of the earthquake was on the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border. People sitting in their homes got scared, shopkeepers ran outside, office people ran towards the stairs. There is no news of damage yet, no one has been injured.
Delhi-NCR is in an earthquake sensitive area. A strong shock can occur at any time. Therefore it is important to be prepared in advance. So let us know some important things related to earthquake.
What to do during an earthquake?
The first and most important thing is not to panic. In panic, people take wrong decisions and get hurt more. The government’s disaster team NDMA teaches three words: bend, cover, hold.
Bend over i.e. sit down or lie down. Cover your head and neck with your hands and if there is a strong table nearby, go under it. Hold that table firmly so that it does not move away while shaking.
If you are inside the house, stay away from windows, mirrors, TV and heavy cupboards. Sit in the corner of the kitchen or bathroom. Don’t make the mistake of standing near the door. If you are outside, go towards an open place like a field or park. Stay away from buildings, trees, electric poles and walls.
If you are driving, stop the car on the side of the road and remain sitting inside. Apply brakes and cover your head with your hands. If you are in school or office, then follow the path shown by the teacher or boss. Don’t take the lift at all. Go down the stairs slowly.
prepare in advance
Keep a small bag ready at home. Keep two liters of water, biscuits or dry food, pain and fever medicine, torch, extra battery, small radio, some money and important papers in it. Always keep this bag near the door so that it can be picked up quickly if needed.

If there are heavy items in the house, like cupboard, TV, water tank, tie them firmly to the wall. If there are cracks in the walls of the house, get them repaired by a mechanic. Teach children both at home and school what to do in case of an earthquake. And form a group with neighbors so that everyone can help each other in times of trouble.
What to do after an earthquake?
Wait for a minute or two even after the shaking stops. Then exit peacefully. Switch off the gas stove, electric switch and water pipe. If there is a fire somewhere, extinguish it first.
Look at the injured people. If there is bleeding, press it with a clean cloth. Take out children, elderly and sick people first. Use your phone only for essential purposes as lines become very busy after an earthquake. Keep listening to government information from radio or TV.
how to help others
First protect yourself, then move towards others. Go to the neighbor’s house. Help evacuate the elderly, children and sick people living alone. Do not move the person whose bone is broken, just place something under his head and give him water.
If someone is trapped under debris, do not try to save yourself alone. Call 112 immediately. Later, come together to distribute water, food and help in cleaning.
ask for help
Call the emergency number 112 and clearly state where you are and what the problem is. Call 100 for police, 101 for fire and 108 for ambulance. If the phone does not work, go out and call people.
