A fresh round of price hikes has come into effect from April 1, marking the beginning of the new financial year with added pressure on household and travel budgets across Karnataka, particularly in Bengaluru.
Prices across essential services and commodities have been rising steadily, and the latest revisions are expected to further strain finances. From electricity and water to toll charges and everyday goods, multiple sectors have seen an upward revision in rates.
The impact is expected to be felt most by urban households, where recurring expenses such as utilities and commuting form a significant part of monthly spending.
Electricity, Water Tariffs Revised
Electricity tariffs have been revised as per the new 2025–26 rates announced by the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC). The hike is expected to impact industrial and commercial users more significantly, adding to operational costs in the business sector.
In Bengaluru, water tariffs have also been increased by 3 percent by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) from today. This is likely to push up monthly water bills for residents, adding to the overall cost of living in the city.
Toll Charges Go Up
Commuters and vehicle owners will also feel the pinch, with toll charges on national highways in the state increased by 3 to 5 percent. The National Highways Authority has implemented the revised rates from April 1 as part of its annual revision linked to the Wholesale Price Index.
For light vehicles such as cars and jeeps, toll fees have gone up by Rs 5 to Rs 10, while heavy vehicles including trucks and buses will see an increase of Rs 15 to Rs 40 per trip.
Wider Price Pressures
Apart from utilities and transport, other cost pressures are also building. Prices of construction materials such as iron and cement have increased, while appliances like air conditioners and coolers have become more expensive.
Air travel is also set to cost more, with ticket prices seeing an estimated 15 percent increase. Additionally, reports indicate that the prices of around 900 medicines could go up, further adding to expenses.
