CAF president Patrice Motsepe assured that he will respect the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s decision on Senegal’s appeal against being stripped of the 2026 AFCON crown.

The Teranga Lions were stripped of their title after CAF ruling their temporary exit from the pitch in Rabat against hosts Morocco in the final as a forfeit.

“I will respect and implement the CAS decision. My personal opinion regarding the matter is irrelevant,” Motsepe said.

The governing body of the sport in the African continent also announced that they were implementing change to reinstate trust, and guarantee no repeat of the situation.

Senegalese players, helmed by coach Thiaw, left the pitch for 15 minutes during stoppage time in protest at a late penalty awarded to Morocco, an incident that also prompted fans to attempt to invade the field.

Morocco forward Brahim Diaz took the penalty and attempted a Panenka, when play eventually resumed but goalkeeper Mendy saved it in a dramatic twist before Senegal went on to score the only goal in extra time, with Papa Gueye firing the ball into the top corner of the net.

CAF “is implementing changes and improvements to their statutes and regulations that will strengthen trust and confidence in (African) referees, VAR operators and judicial bodies.

“These changes and improvements to the statutes and regulations will also ensure that the incidents that took place at the final… do not happen again.”
