US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Iran gave him a “very big present” related to the Strait of Hormuz as a show of faith, boosting his confidence that he was talking to the “right people” in Tehran to end the war.

The cryptic announcement came after Trump unexpectedly postponed threatened attacks on Iran’s power plants and announced that the United States was negotiating with top leaders in Iran for a deal to end the war. However, Tehran has denied being part of any talks to end the war.

While speaking to reporters in the White House, Trump said, “They did something yesterday that was amazing, actually. They gave us a present and the present arrived today. And it was a very big present worth a tremendous amount of money. I’m not going to tell you what that present is, but it was a very significant prize.”

“That meant one thing to me – we’re dealing with the right people.”

What Was Iran’s Gift To US?

When pressed about Iran’s concession, Trump said the “gift” was related to oil and gas. He said it was related to oil traffic and the Strait of Hormuz, which remains virtually shut due to the ongoing war.

The US president said the “present” was not related to Iran’s nuclear program, but repeated his claim that the Iranian side “agreed they will never have a nuclear weapon.”

“The present, the gift they made to us was very significant. And they said they were going to do it and it happened. And they’re the only ones they could have done it,” he added. “We killed all their leadership and then they met to choose new leaders and we killed all of them. And now we have a new group and we can easily do that (kill them).”

There has been some speculation that Iran’s so-called present has to do with the sale of oil, those 140 barrels (of Iranian oil) that have been stranded due to the war, according to Al Jazeera. This came after US Treasury Department lifted sanctions on Iranian oil on Friday amid soaring fuel prices.

Trump further declared that the US had “won” the war and his administration only “negotiated with bombs”, reiterating his pledge that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons. He also indicated that US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth was disappointed with how quickly the campaign had gone.

“I think we are going to end it, but I can’t tell you for sure,” he added.
