- Flight Seat Selection Free: 60% Seats Mandatory; Family Group Sit Together

Now you will be able to select the seat of your choice for free while traveling in the flight. The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) today on March 18 has directed the airlines to keep at least 60% of the seats in domestic flights for free selection.
Till now, airlines used to charge Rs 200 to Rs 1500 separately for most of the seats during web check-in, but after the new rules, passengers will not have to pay extra charge for choosing their favorite seat.
Airlines will not be able to charge extra in the name of ‘preferred seat’
It is often seen that when passengers do web check-in after ticket booking, they get only 20% options in the name of free seats. For the remaining seats, companies used to charge heavy fees in the name of ‘preferred seats’. According to the new order of DGCA, now 60% of the seats in every flight should be such that passengers can choose without any extra charge.
Passenger and family having one PNR will get seat together
The ministry has asked airlines that if a family or group books tickets together, they should be given seats together instead of making them sit separately.
- Old problem: Earlier, families had to spend extra money to sit together or had to sit on separate seats.
- New rule: Now airlines will have to try to allot nearby seats to people traveling together.
Clear rules have to be made for pets and musical instruments
The government has asked airlines to make their services more ‘passenger friendly’.
- Sports and Music: Now transparent rules will have to be made for carrying sports equipment of players and musical instruments of artists.
- Pets: There is often controversy between passengers and airlines regarding the carriage of pets in air travel. Now companies will have to issue clear and public guidelines for this.
Ministry becomes strict after complaints, passengers will have to be informed about their rights
This decision has been taken after increasing complaints of heavy charges being levied by airlines in the name of seat selection and other services. The Government has directed that:
- Display of Rights: The rights of passengers in case of flight delay, cancellation or non-boarding will have to be prominently displayed on the website, app and airport counter.
- Regional Language: Passengers will also have to be given information about their rights in regional languages so that everyone can understand it easily.
India becomes the world’s third largest aviation market
India’s domestic aviation sector is growing rapidly and is now the third largest market in the world. More than 5 lakh passengers travel through Indian airports every day. The Ministry clarified that the convenience of passengers is their top priority. For this, facilities like ‘Udaan Yatri Cafe’ and free Wi-Fi are also being increased at airports for affordable food.
