T-20 World Cup started in 2007. Since then, only two teams have made it to the finals in two consecutive editions. Pakistan played in consecutive finals in 2007 and 2009, while Sri Lanka reached back-to-back title matches in 2012 and 2014.
Now India and South Africa have a chance to repeat the same feat in the 2026 edition. The special thing is that in 2024, both the teams were face to face in the final, where India won.
The semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2026 will be played on March 4 and 5. In the first match, South Africa will face New Zealand, while in the second semi-final, India will face England.
India two-time champion
India has won the T-20 World Cup title twice. In 2007, under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the team won the first edition by defeating Pakistan in the final. After this, in 2009, 2010 and 2012 the team could reach only Super-8.
In 2014, India reached the final, but could not win the trophy. In 2016 and 2022, it reached the semi-finals, while in 2021 the team was eliminated from the group stage. In 2024, India made a strong comeback and became champion for the second time by defeating South Africa.
India won 6 out of 7 matches
In the T20 World Cup 2026, India has played seven matches including league stage and Super-8, out of which it won six. Defeated America, Namibia, Pakistan and Netherlands in the group stage.
Lost to South Africa in the first match of Super-8, but then defeated Zimbabwe and West Indies to secure the semi-final ticket. If they win against England on March 5, India will become the third team to play their second consecutive final.
South Africa in search of first trophy
South Africa’s T20 World Cup journey has been full of ups and downs. The team reached the Super-8 in 2007 and the semi-finals in 2009. But in 2010 and 2012, it could reach only Super-8. In 2014, once again the team lost in the semi-finals.
The team was out of the group stage in 2016, 2021 and 2022, which was a disappointing period for it. Ultimately in 2024, it made it to the finals for the first time, although the team was defeated by India in the title match.
South Africa still invincible
South Africa has won all seven matches so far in this edition. Defeated Canada, Afghanistan, New Zealand and UAE in the group stage. Became table topper by registering wins over India, West Indies and Zimbabwe in Super-8. If it wins against New Zealand on March 4, the team will reach its second consecutive final, which will be the first in its history.
Pakistan made it to the finals of the first two editions
The first T-20 World Cup was played in South Africa in 2007. In the very first edition, Pakistan reached the final, where it faced India. In that match played in Johannesburg, India lifted the trophy by defeating Pakistan by 17 runs.
The 2009 World Cup was played in England. This time Sri Lanka was with Pakistan in the final. In this match played at Lord’s Ground, Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by 8 wickets and won the first title.
Sri Lanka lost in 2012, became champion in 2014
The host team reached the final in the 2012 T20 World Cup played in Sri Lanka. In this match played at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, West Indies defeated Sri Lanka by 36 runs.
Sri Lanka reached the final for the second consecutive time in the 2014 World Cup. This time it faced India in the final. This World Cup was being held in Bangladesh and the final was played at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. In this match, Sri Lanka won the title by defeating India by 6 wickets.
