Iranian-German journalist Michel Abdollahi has made shocking allegations against the Iranian government. He said that Iranian security forces used rape and mutilation as weapons against protesting women in order to create maximum fear among the people and stop the conflict. According to the Daily Mail report, Abdollahi posted a video on social media claiming that he had received information from eyewitnesses. According to them, the arrested women are raped, their uteruses are removed, their scalps are taken off along with their hair and cigarette burn marks are left on their bodies. She said that women’s bodies are rarely or never returned because the regime burns them first to hide the marks of torture. Abdollahi alleged that the Islamic Republic of Iran, under the leadership of Khamenei, weaponizes rape against its people. Even children are being subjected to similar violence. The arrested protesters were forcibly stripped naked and given injections. German newspaper Die Welt has also reported similar incidents quoting eyewitnesses. One witness reported that officers loaded the injured women into vehicles like a pile of garbage and said, “We will not kill you now. First we will rape you, then we will kill you.” Additionally, protesters detained in Iran were forcibly stripped naked and injected with unknown substances. The Guardian newspaper also reported sexual harassment of several protesters, including a 16-year-old girl, in the city of Kermanshah, where security forces touched them inappropriately with batons and severely beat them. Women in Iran had protested by taking off their hijab. The violence that started on December 28 in Iran continued till January 15. These demonstrations are considered to be one of the biggest demonstrations ever. More than 5000 protesters were killed in these. This violence was instigated against inflation. The price of the Iranian currency Rial had reached its lowest level in history. The value of 1 US dollar increased from approximately 1,455,000 to 1,457,000 riyals (open market rate). Even everyday items like tea and bread became very expensive. Many people were demanding to bring back the old monarchy (the rule of the Shah). During this time, women had protested by actions like not wearing hijab, riding motorcycles, burning Khamenei’s pictures and burning cigarettes. Report- About 5000 protesters were killed in Iran. Internet and international communications were shut down in Iran from January 8 to crush the protests. Militias and even 5,000 Shia fighters from Iraq were also deployed. Government and human rights activists agencies also gave different death toll. Iran’s government agency reported 3,117 deaths, most of which were among security forces or innocent bystanders. Reuters, quoting an Iranian official, reported 5,000 deaths. While the US-based Human Rights Activists in Iran estimated 3,308 deaths. Other reports put the number of deaths at 2,000 to 6,000. However, Iran International, a website covering matters related to Iran, claimed that at least 12 thousand people have died across the country. Most of the people have died due to bullet injuries. Mahsa Amini was raped for not wearing hijab properly. To suppress the protests that broke out after the death of Mahsa Amini in Iran in the year 2022, security forces also committed sexual violence, rape and torture with women. Reports by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch confirmed rape, sexual assault, and torture of both men and women. In September 2022, 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini came to visit Tehran with her brother. On September 13, Iranian police arrested her because her hijab was not worn properly. The police took her to a detention center where women are taught the rules of hijab. After a few minutes, Mahsa became unconscious. She was taken to hospital, where she fell into a coma and died on 16 September 2022. The Iranian government claims that Mahsa had a heart attack and his death was due to pre-existing disease. However, his family and several eyewitnesses said that he was beaten by the police. A United Nations investigation said in 2024 that Mahsa Amini’s death was caused by physical violence. Women protesters in Iran were forced to remove their clothes. After this death, massive protests started across Iran, which lasted for months. People took to the streets, especially women, taking off their hijab and revealing their hair. Hundreds were killed in the demonstrations, thousands were arrested, and many were hanged. It was the largest protest movement in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, starting with just the hijab and turning against the entire regime. During this time, 25-year-old Dorsa (name changed) from Gilan province was in the car with her sister and two male friends. Security forces stopped them at the checkpoint. When spray paint was found in their sister’s bag, both the sisters were blindfolded and taken away with their hands tied behind their backs. They were forced to sign a confession of protest. Dorsa was taken to a separate room and beaten badly and abused. After removing her clothes, a man (who was said to be a doctor) touched her body. She became unconscious due to pain and shock. They were left away from the city at night. After reaching home the doctor told that she had been raped. It is illegal for women to roam without hijab in Iran. Many laws have been made in Iran regarding the freedom of women. Which came into effect after the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Hijab and Dress Code: Marriage and Divorce: The minimum age of marriage for girls is 13 years. A man has the right to marry more than once. Women cannot get divorce easily. Custody of children: After divorce, the mother gets the custody of small children, but when they grow up, the father gets it. Citizenship: A foreign man who marries an Iranian woman does not get Iranian citizenship and the child also does not get citizenship from the mother (it comes from the father). Travel: Women must have permission from their husband or father for international travel (with a few exceptions).
